Ovarian Cyst Excision

Ovarian Cyst Excision

Laparoscopic Ovarian Cystectomy is surgical excision of ovarian cyst. Small fluid-filled sacs which develop on ovaries are known as ovarian cysts. Many women with ovarian cysts often do not experience any symptoms. However, others may experience swelling, pressure, pain in abdomen, pain during intercourse & abnormal or painful periods.

Doctors may feel presence of ovarian cysts with help of a pelvic examination. Additionally, an ultrasound test can be performed for diagnosing ovarian cyst. Blood tests can also be performed for checking levels of hormones like testosterone, oestradiol, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) & luteinizing hormone (LH). CA-125 blood test is also performed to find out if the cyst is cancerous. Apart from this a pregnancy test may also be done to rule out pregnancy. Other imaging tests like Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT) scan & Doppler flow studies can also detect cysts.

Cystectomy for removal of ovarian cyst can be performed as a laparoscopic procedure or open surgery. Laparoscopic cystectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure involving use of a long thin instrument with camera known as laparoscope. This procedure is performed through a small incision made below navel & under the influence of general anesthesia. The laparoscope is inserted through this incision & which enables the surgeon see the insides of the abdomen & pelvic region. The surgeon identifies the cyst through the laparoscope & subsequently removes the cyst. However, this procedure is only useful for removing small cysts. If the cyst is too large or connected to ovarian tissue, doctors may have to remove all or part of the ovary. An open cystectomy surgery may be performed in such cases.
